FISHING IN HOCKING HILLS

Fishing

Fishing is a pastime people love to do alone or with others. Whether it’s family, friends, co-workers or a solitary outing, fishing is a great way to explore the beautiful scenery of Hocking Hills and spend a peaceful morning, afternoon, day or even several days finding that perfect fish. Some love to catch and release while others look for food to bring to the campfire or back home again. Whatever it is you are looking for, there are many places to enjoy fishing in Hocking Hills. Let’s take a look at some of the best options.

Fishing Hocking River

Hocking Hills history tells us three Native American tribes used to reside near the Hocking River. The food supply was plentiful and gave them plenty to eat. This included turtles and fish straight from the river. Today, people still love to explore the Hocking River by boat or cast lines from the shore for a quick catch. River species found in this part of Hocking Hills vary from smallmouth bass in the mid and upper portions to channel catfish, quillback, and sauger. Spring is the best time to fish the river but summertime shoreline fishermen and women love to cast their luck for a great catch. River fishing is unlike any other kind of fishing.

Fishing At Lake Hope State Park

Lake Hope State Park is a dream for many fishermen and women. Nature lovers will love the historic geological beauty and photographers and hikers love to come for the exploration and adventure of wandering the lush landscape. At 2,983 acres, there is plenty of space to roam and find what you are looking for. A valid fishing license (age 16 and older) is required. Anglers will find lots of fish in Lake Hope including bluegill and largemouth bass.

Fishing at Rose Lake

The Hocking Hills Reservoir is a favorite among fishing enthusiasts. Rose lake, known as Fisherman’s Lake, is stocked with trout in the spring. Whether it is from the shore or on the water, boats with electric motors and paddlecraft are allowed on all 17 acres of Rose Lake. Hocking Hills reservoir is midway between Old Man’s Cave and Cedar Falls.  There is a 3 mile hike in but it is worth the walk to find those beautiful fish.

Lake Logan Marina

Lake Logan Marina is the exclusive boat rental place on the lake. Pontoons are available for rent by the hour. Cruises, swimming from the boat and fishing are all great ways to explore Lake Logan. Lake Logan was developed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in 1955 to give local and tourists a recreational spot. Many fishing enthusiasts come from around the area to catch northern pike, crappie, and saugeye, among others. Pick up some bait from the beach house including nightcrawlers and wax worms. Picnic areas are nearby as well as hiking and walking paths. Campgrounds and places to park campers to fry up that catch are not too far away.

Belly Boat Fishing

Try your hand at a one-of-a-kind experience. Go belly up in a belly boat! Guiding treks include lots of adventure in these little boats designed to get you paddling out in the water while wading in and catching fish. Known as ‘float tube fishing,’ belly boating came about as a way to access remote ponds and lakes. From a truck tire inner tube to today’s belly boats, they are lightweight and easy to carry. Pick one up for a solo day on the water or join a group and fish together in some of the best waters out there. Each boat comes with two pontoons, a seat cushion, life preservers, gear pockets, fins, and more. Everyone from beginner to advanced is welcome to give it a try.
